Tom Lee Says Bitmine Will Halt Ethereum Purchases Once Holdings Reach 5% of Supply
Bitmine is nearing the final stage of an aggressive campaign to build one of the largest corporate holdings of Ethereum, with Chairman Tom Lee indicating that the company plans to stop purchasing once its position reaches 5% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply.
The company is still approximately 100,000 ETH short of that target. Once the remaining purchases are completed, Bitmine’s accumulation program would come to an end, at least according to the ceiling outlined by Lee. The chairman has said the 5% limit was encouraged by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, linking the company’s strategy to broader concerns about how much of the network’s supply should be concentrated in the hands of a single corporate holder.
Bitmine’s approach reflects a growing trend among companies seeking exposure to digital assets through balance-sheet accumulation rather than short-term trading. Instead of treating Ethereum solely as a speculative investment, such firms can view the token as a long-term treasury asset with potential utility in the network’s proof-of-stake system. Ethereum holders can participate in securing the blockchain by staking their assets, although staking involves operational, liquidity and market risks.
The scale of Bitmine’s stated objective makes the strategy particularly notable. A holding equivalent to 5% of ETH supply would represent a significant concentration of ownership in an asset designed to operate through a broad, decentralized network of users, validators, developers and investors. The threshold also gives the company a clearly defined stopping point, rather than leaving its buying program open-ended.
Lee’s comments suggest that Bitmine does not intend to pursue an unlimited accumulation strategy. Reaching the 5% mark would allow the company to establish a major position while recognizing the sensitivities surrounding supply concentration. The decision to set a ceiling may also reassure market participants who are concerned that an aggressive corporate buyer could steadily reduce the amount of ETH available to other investors.
The company’s buying campaign has attracted attention because of its pace and scale. Bitmine has continued adding Ethereum while the market watches for signs that institutional demand is becoming a more important force in the digital-asset sector. Unlike individual investors, corporations can accumulate through formal treasury programs, financing arrangements and long-term investment mandates. Their decisions can therefore influence market expectations even when the company has not completed its purchases.
However, the reported goal does not mean that Bitmine will necessarily stop all activity involving Ethereum once it reaches the threshold. The stated policy concerns buying ETH and sets a limit at 5% of supply. It does not, based on the available information, establish whether the company could later sell part of its holdings, reinvest staking returns, or adjust its position in response to changes in its corporate strategy. Nor has a specific timetable been provided for acquiring the remaining 100,000 ETH.
The value of the remaining purchases will depend on Ethereum’s market price at the time of each transaction. Because ETH trades continuously and can experience substantial price swings, the dollar cost of closing the gap may change significantly even if the number of tokens remains fixed. The company’s eventual position will also be measured against the supply figure used to calculate the 5% threshold, which can change over time as network activity affects Ethereum’s issuance and burning mechanisms.
Ethereum’s supply dynamics differ from those of a conventional company or commodity. New ETH is issued to compensate validators, while some transaction fees are removed from circulation through the network’s fee-burning process. As a result, the total supply is not permanently fixed, and the amount corresponding to 5% can move over time. That makes the company’s target a relative measure rather than an unchanging number of tokens.
The involvement of Buterin adds another dimension to the announcement. As one of Ethereum’s most prominent co-founders, his views carry influence in discussions about the network’s development and decentralization. Still, the statement that he encouraged the 5% ceiling does not indicate that he controls Bitmine’s purchasing decisions or that the target represents an official Ethereum rule. The limit is a corporate policy, not a protocol requirement.
Bitmine’s remaining purchases will therefore be watched both as an investment decision and as a test of how corporate ownership can coexist with Ethereum’s decentralized structure. If the company reaches its target, it will have completed a large-scale accumulation campaign while stopping short of seeking an even greater share of the network’s supply. For now, the company remains about 100,000 ETH away from the goal that Lee has identified as the endpoint of its buying strategy.
