Institutional Pullback Drains $1.2 Billion From Bitcoin and Ether ETFs
U.S. crypto exchange-traded funds suffered a sharp reversal in demand during the week through Oct. 9, ending a period of sustained buying in several of the market’s largest products. Bitcoin and ether funds together recorded more than $1.2 billion in outflows, while Solana funds also saw their first weekly withdrawal after 14 consecutive weeks of inflows.
The pullback marked a significant change in tone for institutional participation. Bitcoin ETFs had attracted money for three straight weeks before investors withdrew approximately $681 million during the latest reporting period. The reversal erased the momentum that had supported the products through the previous stretch and underscored how quickly fund flows can change when market confidence weakens.
Ether ETFs were also caught in the broader retreat. Although the source data did not provide a separate figure for ether’s losses, the combined withdrawal from bitcoin and ether products exceeded $1.2 billion. That total indicates that the two largest cryptocurrency ETF markets experienced a broad-based reduction in demand rather than an isolated decline affecting only one asset.
ETF flows are closely watched because they offer a visible measure of how investors are allocating capital through regulated market vehicles. Unlike direct purchases on crypto exchanges, ETF activity can reflect decisions by asset managers, financial advisers, institutions and other investors who prefer exposure through traditional brokerage accounts. Large inflows are often interpreted as evidence of stronger institutional interest, while withdrawals can signal profit-taking, caution or a broader reduction in risk appetite.
Bitcoin’s $681 million outflow was particularly notable because it ended a three-week run of net inflows. The products had benefited from a period in which investors were willing to increase exposure to the largest digital asset through exchange-traded structures. The latest numbers, however, suggest that buying pressure had weakened by the end of the week covered by the report.
The change in bitcoin fund flows also affected the wider interpretation of institutional demand. When the largest and most established crypto ETF category records repeated inflows, it can provide a measure of stability for the broader digital-asset market. A sudden withdrawal, especially after several positive weeks, may instead point to a more defensive stance among investors. It does not by itself establish a long-term trend, but it does show that recent demand was not immune to reversal.
Solana funds provided another important signal. Their 14-week inflow streak came to an end, removing one of the clearest examples of persistent buying among major crypto investment products. The break in that run suggests that the latest deterioration was not limited to bitcoin and ether, even though those assets accounted for the largest reported losses.
Despite the widespread weakness, demand was not absent across the entire sector. XRP and NEAR were identified as rare areas that continued to attract investor interest during the week. Their relative resilience stood out against the heavy withdrawals from the largest funds and the interruption of Solana’s long inflow streak.
The contrast between XRP and NEAR on one side and bitcoin, ether and Solana on the other illustrates the uneven nature of crypto fund flows. Investors may reduce exposure to the market as a whole while still directing money toward selected assets or products. Such divergence can reflect differences in portfolio positioning, short-term trading strategies or expectations about individual networks. The available figures, however, do not establish the specific reason these two assets retained demand.
The scale of the combined bitcoin and ether withdrawals also highlights the importance of ETF flows as a source of market liquidity. Even without knowing how the money was redeployed, the movement of more than $1.2 billion out of the two categories represents a meaningful change in the capital entering and leaving publicly traded crypto vehicles. It may affect sentiment beyond the funds themselves, since market participants often treat ETF activity as an indicator of the strength of professional participation.
Still, weekly data should be viewed as a snapshot rather than definitive proof of a lasting shift. A single period of outflows can reflect investors adjusting positions, securing gains or responding to short-term market conditions. Likewise, the continuation of demand in XRP and NEAR does not guarantee that their inflow patterns will persist.
The latest figures nevertheless provide a clear picture of a market losing momentum across several of its most closely followed ETF categories. Bitcoin’s three-week inflow streak has ended, Solana’s 14-week run has been broken, and ether joined bitcoin in a combined loss exceeding $1.2 billion. For now, XRP and NEAR remain among the few reported pockets of demand as investors reassess their exposure to digital assets.
