Gate CEO Urges Crypto-Wide Security Pact After $6.3B Binance Breach
Lin Han, founder and chief executive of Gate, has called for the creation of a global cryptocurrency security alliance following what was described as a $6.3 billion hack affecting Binance on Thursday.
Han’s proposal centers on establishing common procedures for the cryptocurrency industry, both to reduce the likelihood of major security incidents and to improve coordination after an attack has occurred. The suggested alliance would bring industry participants together around shared security standards, response protocols and methods for handling the broader consequences of compromised systems.
The call comes as digital-asset platforms continue to face persistent threats involving exchanges, wallets, blockchains and other infrastructure that supports cryptocurrency trading and settlement. A successful attack on a major platform can affect more than the immediate operator. It may disrupt trading, undermine confidence among customers and counterparties, complicate efforts to trace or freeze assets, and place pressure on other companies to respond quickly.
Han’s proposal points to a need for a more coordinated approach rather than relying on individual companies to manage each incident independently. Under a common framework, participating firms could establish agreed procedures for sharing information, notifying relevant parties and coordinating technical investigations. Such arrangements could also help companies determine how to communicate with users when the facts of an incident are still developing.
The scale of the Binance incident cited in the call has added urgency to the discussion. The source material did not provide technical details about how the hack occurred, identify the assets involved or explain the status of any investigation. It also did not describe Binance’s response or say whether the reported losses had been recovered. Those details are important in determining the precise impact of an attack, but the figure alone illustrates the potential consequences of a large-scale security failure in the digital-asset sector.
Cryptocurrency businesses have long faced a range of security risks. These can include stolen private keys, compromised accounts, malicious software, weaknesses in smart contracts, insider threats and attacks on third-party service providers. In some cases, attackers target the systems that control the movement of funds. In others, they exploit weaknesses in applications or manipulate users into surrendering access credentials. The variety of attack methods makes it difficult for any single organization to address the full threat landscape on its own.
A security alliance could seek to create baseline requirements for areas such as custody controls, access management, transaction monitoring and emergency communications. It might also develop procedures for verifying suspicious transactions and identifying wallets connected to a suspected theft. The effectiveness of any such system would depend on the willingness of participants to share information promptly and to maintain compatible technical and legal processes.
Information-sharing presents its own challenges. Companies may be reluctant to disclose details about vulnerabilities, losses or internal controls because of regulatory concerns, commercial sensitivities and the risk of further exposing their systems. A workable alliance would therefore need clear rules governing what information is shared, with whom and at what stage of an investigation. It would also need safeguards to prevent sensitive data from being misused.
Coordination can be particularly difficult because the cryptocurrency industry operates across national borders. Exchanges, blockchain developers, custodians, payment providers and users may be located in different jurisdictions, each with its own requirements for reporting incidents, preserving evidence and dealing with suspected criminal activity. An industry-led body could help create a common operational language, although it would not replace the authority of national regulators or law-enforcement agencies.
The proposed alliance could also encourage regular testing of crisis procedures. Participants might conduct simulations involving stolen assets, disrupted services or compromised credentials to identify weaknesses before a real incident occurs. Shared training and technical exercises could allow security teams to build relationships in advance, reducing the time needed to establish contact during an emergency.
Prevention, however, would remain the primary objective. Standardized practices can reduce avoidable weaknesses, but they cannot eliminate every risk. Security depends not only on technology but also on governance, employee controls, auditing and the way companies respond to warnings. Clear responsibility within each organization is essential, particularly when decisions involving large transfers or changes to critical systems must be made quickly.
The incident referenced by Han highlights the reputational stakes for the industry. Cryptocurrency platforms compete for users on the basis of reliability and security, and a major breach can raise questions about the safeguards used across the wider market. Customers may also find it difficult to assess the strength of a platform’s internal controls before an incident occurs, making transparency and consistent security practices especially important.
Han’s proposal is therefore aimed at a broader industry problem rather than a single company’s response. By calling for a global security alliance, the Gate chief executive is seeking a structure through which crypto businesses can prepare for attacks collectively, respond with greater consistency and limit the damage when defenses fail. Whether such an initiative emerges, and how widely it is adopted, will depend on the cooperation of companies that often operate as competitors while facing many of the same security threats.
