Cathie Wood Points to Bitcoin’s Lead Over Gold as Strive’s $169 Million Purchases Surpass Strategy
Strive’s latest Bitcoin purchase has placed the investment firm’s expanding cryptocurrency treasury strategy in sharper competition with Strategy, while reinforcing Cathie Wood’s broader argument that Bitcoin is outperforming gold as a long-term store of value.
Strive acquired 2,000 Bitcoin for nearly $169 million, according to the company’s disclosure. The transaction is almost six times larger than Strategy’s most recently disclosed purchase, giving Strive a notable boost as publicly traded companies continue to explore Bitcoin as a balance-sheet asset.
The purchase also increased Bitcoin per effective common share by approximately 3.8%, a measure Strive uses to assess how its cryptocurrency holdings are growing relative to its share base. That calculation is important because companies that issue additional shares to finance Bitcoin purchases can increase their total holdings while diluting existing investors. Tracking Bitcoin on a per-share basis offers a way to gauge whether shareholders are gaining greater exposure to the asset.
Strive’s move reflects the increasingly competitive nature of the corporate Bitcoin market. Strategy has long dominated that space, using debt, equity offerings and other financing methods to accumulate a substantial digital-asset reserve. Its approach has turned the company into one of the most closely watched publicly traded Bitcoin holders and helped establish a model for firms seeking to link their market value to cryptocurrency exposure.
The size of Strive’s latest transaction signals that the strategy is no longer limited to a single high-profile buyer. Rather than adding Bitcoin in small increments, Strive made a purchase large enough to draw a direct comparison with Strategy’s latest acquisition. The contrast highlights the different stages of accumulation among companies adopting similar treasury policies.
For investors, the comparison extends beyond the number of coins purchased. A company’s financing structure, share count, cost basis and ability to raise capital can all affect whether Bitcoin accumulation translates into value for shareholders. The 3.8% increase in Bitcoin per effective common share suggests Strive’s latest purchase was designed not merely to expand its total holdings, but also to improve the amount of Bitcoin represented by each share.
Cathie Wood, the founder and chief executive of Ark Invest, has repeatedly presented Bitcoin as a technologically enabled monetary asset with characteristics that distinguish it from traditional stores of value. Her latest assessment that Bitcoin is beating gold adds to the debate over which asset is better positioned to attract investors seeking protection from currency weakness, monetary uncertainty or long-term erosion in purchasing power.
Gold has traditionally filled that role. It has a long history as a reserve asset and is held by central banks, institutions and individual investors around the world. Bitcoin, by contrast, remains a comparatively young and more volatile asset, but its supporters point to a fixed maximum supply, digital portability and the ability to transfer it without relying on a conventional financial intermediary.
The comparison is therefore not simply a contest over recent price performance. It also reflects different views about how value will be stored and transferred in an increasingly digital economy. Wood’s preference for Bitcoin represents the more technology-focused side of that discussion, while gold continues to benefit from its established role in global markets.
Corporate purchases have become an important part of the Bitcoin investment story because they create a channel through which public-market investors can gain exposure without holding the cryptocurrency directly. Buying shares in a company such as Strive or Strategy gives investors exposure to management decisions, financing activity and stock-market sentiment in addition to the underlying Bitcoin price. That structure can amplify gains when Bitcoin rises, but it can also introduce risks that would not exist in a direct holding.
The latest Strive acquisition may also increase scrutiny of how companies fund future purchases. Large-scale accumulation can support a bullish market narrative, yet it depends on access to capital and investor willingness to tolerate volatility. If a company issues new equity, takes on debt or uses other financial tools to buy Bitcoin, the resulting impact on shareholders will depend on the terms of those transactions and on the performance of the asset afterward.
Strive’s reported increase in Bitcoin per effective common share gives investors one reference point for evaluating the purchase. Total Bitcoin holdings show the scale of a company’s reserve, but the per-share figure indicates how that reserve is being distributed across the ownership base. The distinction has become increasingly relevant as more companies adopt treasury models that rely on recurring capital raising.
With a 2,000-Bitcoin acquisition valued at nearly $169 million, Strive has made a forceful addition to its holdings and moved closer to the center of the corporate Bitcoin conversation. Strategy remains the better-known pioneer, but the gap between the two companies’ latest purchases shows how quickly the field is developing. Wood’s comparison with gold adds a broader investment thesis to the corporate buying race, framing Bitcoin not only as a speculative asset but also as a potential competitor to one of the world’s oldest forms of monetary protection.
