Bitcoin Repeats Market Signal That Preceded the 2019 and 2023 Bull Runs
Bitcoin has regained a momentum threshold that Glassnode previously identified around the early stages of major advances in 2019 and 2023, reviving expectations that the cryptocurrency could be preparing for another sustained recovery.
The comparison is drawing attention because both earlier periods marked important changes in market direction. In each case, bitcoin had moved through a difficult or uncertain phase before momentum began to improve. The return of a similar signal does not guarantee that prices will repeat those performances, but it offers a historical reference for investors assessing whether the latest move is part of a broader trend rather than a short-lived rebound.
Glassnode’s analysis focuses on momentum, a broad measure of how strongly an asset is moving and whether buying or selling pressure is gaining control. Such indicators are commonly used to assess the strength of a market advance. When momentum recovers beyond a key threshold, analysts may interpret it as evidence that bearish pressure is easing and that demand is beginning to rebuild.
The significance of the latest reading lies less in the signal by itself than in its historical timing. Glassnode observed a comparable condition near the beginning of bitcoin’s bull-market phases in 2019 and 2023. Those periods followed stretches in which confidence had weakened and market participants were still debating whether bitcoin had reached a durable bottom. Momentum eventually improved, helping establish the foundation for larger advances.
The 2019 comparison is particularly relevant because bitcoin was emerging from the prolonged downturn that followed the 2017 market peak. The cryptocurrency had spent much of the preceding year under pressure, and many investors remained cautious even after prices began to stabilize. A recovery in momentum helped signal that the market’s internal conditions were changing before the full scale of the subsequent rally became clear.
The 2023 pattern developed under different circumstances but produced a similar analytical debate. Bitcoin had endured a difficult 2022, marked by falling asset prices, forced deleveraging and a loss of confidence across the digital-asset sector. As prices recovered in 2023, analysts looked for evidence that the improvement represented more than a temporary reaction to depressed valuations. Momentum measures were among the tools used to determine whether participation and demand were broadening.
The current signal therefore strengthens the case for a recovery, but it does not remove the market’s central challenge: bitcoin still needs to demonstrate that buyers are willing to support higher prices. A momentum reading can indicate improving conditions without proving that a new bull market is firmly established. Sustained advances generally require follow-through, expanding participation and enough demand to absorb profit-taking from existing holders.
That distinction is important in bitcoin’s market, where sharp rallies and reversals can occur within relatively short periods. Momentum may improve rapidly during a relief rally, only to weaken if buyers fail to return at higher levels. Conversely, a signal that initially appears modest can become more meaningful if it is followed by continued price strength and stronger trading activity.
Investors are also likely to watch whether bitcoin can hold its recent gains. A move above a technical or momentum threshold is often treated as an initial confirmation rather than a final verdict. If the cryptocurrency remains above the level and continues to build upward pressure, the comparison with 2019 and 2023 may gain credibility. If the signal quickly fades, it could instead prove to be another temporary improvement within a broader period of uncertainty.
Historical parallels must also be handled carefully. Bitcoin’s market structure has changed over time as institutional participation, derivatives trading and broader financial-market connections have grown. The conditions surrounding the 2019 and 2023 recoveries were not identical, and the forces influencing bitcoin today may differ from those that shaped either earlier advance. A familiar indicator can provide useful context, but it cannot account for every change in liquidity, investor positioning or macroeconomic sentiment.
Glassnode’s reading is consequently best understood as a constructive piece of evidence rather than a prediction. It suggests that the balance between buyers and sellers may be improving and that bitcoin’s recent behavior resembles conditions seen before previous major advances. Yet the market still needs confirmation through persistent demand and the ability to withstand periods of selling.
For now, the signal has shifted the discussion away from whether bitcoin can recover at all and toward whether the recovery can develop into a lasting trend. The historical resemblance to 2019 and 2023 gives bullish investors a reason for optimism, while the unresolved demand test leaves room for caution. The next phase of price action will help determine whether the latest momentum improvement marks the beginning of another extended advance or simply a temporary pause in a still-uncertain market.
