Zcash Developers Set November Upgrade to Triple Payment Speed
Zcash developers have confirmed that the network’s NU7 upgrade is scheduled for activation in November, with the change expected to reduce the interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. The adjustment would allow new blocks to be produced roughly three times as often as they are today, increasing the pace at which transactions are recorded on the blockchain.
The upgrade’s target month has been selected, but an important technical detail remains unresolved. Developers still need to incorporate the final activation block height into the formal specification and release it in the node software used by the network. Until that work is completed, the November timetable does not identify the precise point at which NU7 will take effect.
A block height is the sequential number assigned to a block as it is added to a blockchain. Setting an activation height gives network participants a shared trigger for adopting a protocol change. Once the specified height is reached, compatible software can begin enforcing the new rules. The process is intended to ensure that miners, node operators, wallets and other infrastructure providers know exactly when the upgrade becomes active.
The shift from a 75-second block interval to 25 seconds is the central performance change associated with NU7. Under the existing schedule, the network aims to add a new block about once every minute and 15 seconds. Following the upgrade, that target would fall to approximately one block every 25 seconds. The result would be a faster stream of block confirmations, although the time required for a transaction to receive a particular number of confirmations would still depend on how many confirmations users, exchanges or other services require.
Shorter block intervals can make a blockchain feel more responsive because transactions have more frequent opportunities to be included in a block. They may also reduce the waiting time for applications that monitor the network for new activity. However, the change does not automatically mean that every transaction will be settled instantly. Transactions can remain unconfirmed if network demand rises, if fees influence inclusion decisions, or if a service applies its own confirmation policy.
The upgrade therefore has implications beyond the visible change in the clock between blocks. Every network participant running Zcash node software will need to use a version that includes the NU7 rules before the activation point. Nodes that do not support the upgrade could become incompatible with the chain after the relevant block height, depending on how the final protocol changes are implemented.
For developers, exchanges and other organisations operating Zcash infrastructure, the remaining work is consequently significant even though the broad timing has been announced. They must identify the correct software release, test it against the planned activation conditions and ensure that their systems can continue processing blocks after the transition. Wallet providers may also need to verify that transaction creation, balance tracking and confirmation displays behave as expected under the faster schedule.
The block-time reduction is expected to affect the rhythm of the entire network rather than simply changing a user-interface setting. Mining and node operations will have to process and relay blocks at a higher frequency. Network participants will also need to account for the possibility that events occur more quickly, including the arrival of competing blocks or the reorganisation of a short portion of the chain. The final software and specification will define how NU7 handles those protocol-level details.
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency whose design supports both transparent and shielded transactions. Its development has historically involved periodic network upgrades that introduce changes to consensus rules, performance or other aspects of the protocol. As with any blockchain upgrade, coordination is essential because the network relies on many independently operated nodes following the same rules.
The decision to target November provides a planning window for that coordination, while the missing activation height leaves the schedule incomplete from an operational perspective. A month-level announcement can indicate the intended release period, but participants generally need the exact height and corresponding software version to prepare for activation with precision. Those details are expected to be reflected in the finalized specification and node release.
The performance target is straightforward: if the 25-second interval is achieved and remains stable, Zcash would generate blocks at about three times the current rate. That could improve the speed at which ordinary network activity is reflected on-chain, while also placing greater importance on reliable software, block propagation and operational readiness.
For now, the confirmed information is limited to the November target and the planned reduction in block time. The exact activation height has yet to be merged into the specification and distributed through node software. The next stage of the NU7 rollout will therefore center on finalizing those technical details and giving network participants the information needed to upgrade before the change takes effect.
